Abstract: The report looks at the production and labour history of the defence industry in India up to 1955, with a particular focus on the years between about 1946 to 1955, looking at production in the following broad sectors: Engineering; Metallurgical; Optical; Explosive; Leather and clothing (textiles); Transport; Building and roads. It looks at workers’ conditions, union organisation, struggles and strikes, political developments, and argues for a strong union presence in the industry.
